Two Ontario politicians have launched a proposal to get private property rights included in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Federal MP Scott Reid (Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington) and MPP Randy Hillier (Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington) announced they will jointly present resolutions in the House of Commons and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to amend Canada’s Constitution, embedding property rights within the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

With all the recent musing about merit pay for teachers, it was only natural for National Post columnist Kelly McParland to float the notion of merit pay for politicians earlier this month. Holding politicians to account financially, and not just simply at the ballot box, is an idea that deserves its own public debate.

Your recent article on Bill 191 shows an understanding of the facts, but a very convoluted conclusion. While The Far North Act is criticized by everyone, you conclude this means the “right balance” is struck. Most people would conclude a bill that pleases nobody and harms everybody is the hallmark of an out-of-touch government.

Conservative MPP criticizes heavy-handed G20 policing as an attack on democratic rights and freedoms.

It has been said that in war, truth is the first casualty. Yet in the wake of the Toronto G20 summit, it is clear that truth is an unwelcome intruder within the realm of politics as well. Call it my inherent cynicism about politics or maybe put it down to my observation and experience, but the discussion and media coverage surrounding the G20 summit has been ignorant at best, or deliberately misleading at worst.
