Eliminate the Drive Clean Program

The Drive Clean Program was introduced a decade ago to address one of the leading causes of smog in Ontario at that time; vehicle exhaust. After 10 years, vehicle exhaust is no longer a significant source of pollution. Even the founder of the program says it has run its course. It's time to end this expensive program that has out-run its purpose.

A Petition to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

WHEREAS the the Auditor General specifically warned the government to delay implementation of the new Drive Clean test to ensure technical testing was completed and problems were resolved;

AND WHEREAS the AG also recommended that due to modern improvements in vehicles and fuels vehicle emissions are no longer a major contributor to smog in Ontario and this program be phased out;

AND WHEREAS  the fail rate for vehicles through this new system has skyrocketed due to the shortcoming of the test itself and not emissions problems with the vehicle, making Drive Clean nothing more than a tax grab for the government;

WE the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows: That the government of Ontario eliminate the Drive Clean Program.

    “Is your check engine light on? If so it is going to cost you $400 to get your drive clean certificate. " Another way for the government to ROB good tax paying citizens of their hard earned money.

    More research should have been done before putting this into action. I may own a garage but I feel the money that is being spent on this issue is causing people not to be able to afford to up keep their vehicle as well. Safety versus improper new e testing system. The people can not afford the time or money this is causing some. Trip permits had to have sky rocketed. People need their cars to get back and forth to work hospitals etc.. Different make and models have different drive cycles if you did something as simple as put a new battery in your car. A V.W. apparently can have 15 different steps for example. Get them right or else . I believe for those of my customers that have to have an e test there should have been commercials of t.v. to warn the people of this so they don’t go the week or couple days before their birthday for an e-test to find out they can’t get it done . Remember this is only for some Canadians as well as just in Ontario alone it differs from say living in Renfrew to living in Lanark County .Aren’t we the lucky ones. I just believe what is good for one should be good for everyone nothing against the people that don’t have to do the e-test . Do you think Renfrew head count went up. Wish I had family living there. I am not against protecting the environment by any means BUT DO BELEIVE E-TEST should have been better tested before changing the old system .Cost to the garages involved a whack of money to change over, training and equipment and it will only bring unhappy customers and unsafe cars. Where do you put the money towards . I do ask every customer when their birthday is now and give them the heads up best I can. BUT PEOPLE DO NOT LEAVE E-TEST TILL RIGHT BEFORE YOUR BIRTHDAY.AS TIME GOES ON I WOULD THINK THERE WILL BE A BACK LOG.

    I sold a vehicle in early January. It took the garage almost a month and countless attempts to finally get the car ready to do the test. We spent over $200 in gas an hours on the road following the procedure recommended by Drive Clean Ontario to get the car enabled to do the test if the system rejected it. What a waste of time and money for the people of Ontario!!

    All my 1980’s and 2005(newest) vehicles always pass. What a tax grab and inconvenience.

    Just don’t replace DriveClean with something more oppressive. It should be sufficient that new cars have to meet certain fuel economy standards and that it’s in our own best interests to keep cars running efficiently.

    I drive only VW diesels which use synthetic oils. The test is a total rip off. They literally sit and watch your tail pipe and hand you the bill and sticker. Meanwhile, the truck belching soot beside me is exempt. Eliminate the test.

    This program makes no sense and simply costs every driver unnecessary maintenance costs. I work will people who drive to the same place for work everyday that do not require this test due to where their home is. Eliminate this so that people can afford to keep their cars on the road, work and pay taxes.
