QUEEN’S PARK – Ontarians confronted with sexual violence or harassment will get the opportunity to have their voices heard before a select legislative committee initiated by the Ontario PCs, Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes – Brock announced.

“I’m very pleased that the select committee has finally commenced and is working towards a comprehensive strategy to combat sexual harassment in the work place and protecting victims from further harm,” said Scott, Ontario PC Critic for Women’s Issues and Vice Chair of the select committee.

Yesterday marked the first official meeting of the Select Committee on Sexual Violence and Harassment. The meeting allowed members to open the discussion on the focus and mandate to be pursued by the select committee.

“I’m proud that the Ontario PC Party took the initiative to press Premier Wynne to look at ways to combat sexual violence and harassment in our province,” said fellow committee member Randy Hillier, MPP for Lanark – Frontenac – Lennox and Addington. “Our party has seized the opportunity to put forward concrete proposals for the direction of the select committee.”

The select committee of MPPs from all Parties will travel across the province to consult with Ontarians and will produce an interim report by June 4, 2015 and a final report by December 10, 2015. The committee will also offer witnesses the option to testify in camera to make it easier for individuals to come forward.

“I want to thank the members of the legislature for agreeing with our requests and understanding the magnitude of the issues faced by victims of sexual violence and harassment across the province of Ontario.” said Scott.
